Making the campervan dream a customized reality – all your own

Four years ago, Richard Wallis and his wife, Marianne, hired a motorhome for a trip across the Arctic Circle. They have always loved road trips, but they enjoyed this one so much they finally set their sights on buying a campervan of their own.

From the beginning, the question of vehicle size wasn’t too much of a factor. They knew they wanted something smaller that could also be used as an everyday vehicle.

After looking at different campervan converters, Richard found Revolution Campers online. “First, we liked their approach. Then, when we went to see Andy Burgess at Revolution’s factory, we also liked what we saw,” said Richard. After thinking about it for a couple more months, they placed their order.

With the help of Revolution Campervans, they began planning a bespoke van of their own. Can you imagine the fun? In the right circumstances, the process can almost be as rewarding as traveling itself!

Here are the options they started looking at. They wanted an awning, a heater, alloy wheels, side bars, roof bars, and of course, captains-style driver and passenger seats that swivel to face the interior when camping. They also decided to include a cold water exterior shower for rinsing sand off their gear and dog after going to the beach.

So finally, after a few years of research, planning, and a lockdown delay – Richard and Marianne took delivery of their Revolution Ricos Volkswagen campervan in April 2021. It is a conversion of a 2018 Volkswagen Transporter with 30,000 miles on the odometer, and finished in a two-tone paintwork of white over copper bronze.

Since their campervan’s arrival coincided with the easing of lockdown restrictions and the re-opening of campsites, Richard and Marianne immediately grabbed the opportunity for a six day trip to Devon and Cornwall. They stopped at a selection of campsites and locations with a final stop at a cliff-top campsite overlooking the beach at Polzeath in North Cornwall. They said it was absolutely beautiful – except for a force nine gale on their first night! As much as they have that natural spirit of adventure, they smartly decided against keeping the roof up while they slept that night.

As we now coast into summer, the couple are using the Revolution Ricos as their main car and have already planned to make regular, extended trips to Switzerland where they have family and a property.

If you’re looking for a Volkswagen campervan, Richard’s top tips are to, if all possible, visit the converter. “When you’re able to see behind the scenes, it’s very useful and informative toward getting just what you want.”
